ChatGPT: Recap of May 2023 Discussion

Imagine if Google could compose college-level essays. Speak and analyze every language. Pass the US Medical Licensing Exam. Enter ChatGPT. This chatbot released in early 2023 already has over 100 million users taking advantage of its astounding capabilities. But as the technology threatens to create malicious software, spread misinformation, and render certain occupations obsolete, do its dangers outweigh its revolutionary capabilities? Together we will explore both the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT and discuss the implications of rapidly developing artificial intelligence.

A curriculum is created for each discussion, which includes articles to distribute to the residents beforehand, a lesson to introduce the topic at the start of the discussion, and discussion questions to facilitate resident participation and engagement. Linked to this post is the complete discussion outline for our May 24th discussion on ChatGPT at the North Hill Retirement Community. Below are excerpts from the document, including the list of articles distributed to the residents prior to the discussion and a list of some of the questions we discussed together.

Articles for distribution in advance to residents:

Discussion questions:

  1. Should we limit the capabilities of and/or censor ChatGPT? What capabilities should it not have?

  2. Who is accountable when ChatGPT shares wrong or potentially dangerous information?

  3. Should the potential for job loss influence our adoption of ChatGPT? How do you see the workforce changing?

  4. What distinguishes ChatGPT from tools like calculators? Are they essentially the same thing?

  5. How can we prevent students from using ChatGPT to cheat? How do we detect it when they do? How can we redesign traditional educational frameworks such as exams and essays to prevent plagiarism using ChatGPT?

  6. What sorts of regulations should we, or can we, put on ChatGPT and AI?
